What is an Oil Centrifuge?
An oil centrifuge uses high-speed centrifugal force to separate the different components in a liquid. Through centrifugal force, solid particles and liquids are separated based on their differences in density. Heavier substances settle on the outer wall of the centrifuge, while the lighter oil concentrates at the center, ultimately resulting in the extraction of pure oil. This process is not only suitable for lubricating oils but can also be used for the treatment of other types of industrial oils.
Depending on the type of contaminants in the oil, centrifuges are designed differently, including bowl-type centrifuges and tube-type centrifuges. Bowl-type centrifuges are ideal for removing solid particles, while tube-type centrifuges are more suitable for handling oils with higher water content. Centrifuges can also break emulsions and remove particulate impurities, making them highly effective for achieving clean and reusable oil.
3 Phase Decanter centrifuge
LWS450 separates the underflow of the main settling tank (CST) into oil, sludge water and solid cake in its 3-phase operation.
Operating Principle
Separation takes place in a horizontal conocylindrical bowl equipped with a screw conveyor. The palm oil sludge is fed into the bowl through a stationary inlet tube and smoothly accelerated by a specially designed two-port inlet distributor. Centrifugal force causes instant sedimentation of the solids on the wall of the bowl, and a layer-wise separation of heavy (water) and light (oil) liquids. The conveyor, rotating in the same direction as the bowl, but at a different speed, conveys the solids to the conical end. Here the solids are lifted clear of the liquid and centrifugally dewatered before being discharged into the collecting vessel. The clarified liquids overflow into the casing through openings in the cylindrical end of the bowl. Both phases leave the collecting compartments in the hood by gravity flow through outlets under the machine.
Wear Protection
The LWS450 decanter centrifuge is designed with all parts in contact with a process liquid made of corrosion resistant materials not affecting the oil quality.
• The bowl and other major parts are made of AISI 316 stainless steel.
• The conveyor is supplied with special erosion resistant hard facing of flights. At the conical section of the conveyor, the flights are protected with sintered tungsten carbide tiles. The estimated lifetime for the conveyor tiles will be at least 20,000 running hours operating on under flow and 15,000 running hours operating on crude oil. If the lifetime is less, the replacement cost will be calculated on a pro-rata basis after 10,000 hours and 8,000 hours
respectively.
• The decanter comes with the "two-port" feed zone that has been especially designed for the palm oil application and ensures minimal wear. The design includes feed bushings made of sintered Tungsten Carbide. All parts in the feed zone can be easily exchanged.
• The sludge ports are protected with erosion resistant bushings.
Capacity and Process Performance
The data mentioned below are based on following assumptions: 1 ton FFB/hour = 0.40 ton sludge water/hour, 1 ton FFB/hour = 0.60 ton diluted crude palm oil/hour.
Capacity
When used to separate the underflow of the main settling tank, each LWS450 has a capacity corresponding up to 60 ton FFB/hour.
