Phycoerythrin, also known as phycobiliprotein, is a pigment protein present in algae such as red algae, cyanobacteria, and cryptophytes. It belongs to the family of light-harvesting phycobiliproteins and serves as a light-harvesting pigment that aids the main chlorophyll pigments in the process of photosynthesis.
 
  • Basic Information
    • Definition: Phycoerythrin is a pigment protein found in algae like red algae, cyanobacteria, and cryptophytes. It is part of the light-harvesting phycobiliprotein family and acts as a light-harvesting pigment that assists the primary chlorophyll pigments in photosynthesis.
    • Composition and Structure: It is composed of a protein part covalently bound to chromophores called phycobilins. Its molecular structure consists of carrier proteins linked by thioether bonds to open-chain linear extended tetrapyrrole compounds. It typically consists of (αβ) monomers, forming disk-shaped trimers (αβ),or hexamers (αβ), and also contains γ subunits.

    • Color and Solubility: It appears red and has good water solubility.
    • Spectral Characteristics: The maximum absorption peak is at 565±5 nanometers, and the fluorescence emission peak is at 578±5 nanometers. When excited at a specific wavelength, it can emit intense fluorescence, and its fluorescence intensity is 30 to 100 times that of fluorescein.

    • Photosynthesis: It plays an important role in capturing and transferring light energy during photosynthesis. It can transfer the absorbed light energy to chlorophyll a and participate in the light reaction process, helping algae to carry out photosynthesis.
